In recent times, Microsoft has been working on unifying its security offerings under the Microsoft Defender brand. As part of this effort, Microsoft has rebranded some of its popular security technologies to better reflect the multi-platform capabilities of these products.
The following are some of the rebrandings that Microsoft has made to its security technologies:
- Microsoft Defender Antivirus: formerly known as Windows Defender Antivirus, it is the built-in antivirus solution for Windows 10. Microsoft Defender Antivirus provides real-time protection against viruses, malware, and other malicious software, helping to keep customers’ devices secure and free from unwanted threats.

- Microsoft Defender for Identity: formerly known as Azure Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), it provides identity-based threat protection for organizations. Microsoft Defender for Identity helps organizations to detect and respond to threats targeting identities, and provides advanced threat protection for Azure Active Directory, Windows Server Active Directory, and other identity systems.
- Microsoft Defender for Office 365: formerly known as Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection (ATP), it provides advanced threat protection for Office 365. Microsoft Defender for Office 365 helps organizations protect against threats to their email and Office apps, and provides real-time protection, zero-day protection, and the ability to quickly detect and respond to threats.
- Microsoft Threat Protection: formerly known as Microsoft 365 Defender, it is the security suite that provides end-to-end protection and helps to quickly detect, investigate, and respond to threats across devices, email, and cloud apps. Microsoft Threat Protection integrates with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Microsoft Defender for Office 365, and Microsoft Cloud App Security to provide a comprehensive and integrated security solution for organizations.
In addition to the above rebrandings, Microsoft Cloud App Security continues to be known as Microsoft Cloud App Security and is part of the Microsoft Threat Protection solution.
